The West may have Mardi Gras, but Greece has Apokries. This magical Carnival period lasts for three weeks, and it’s a non-stop party until Orthodox Lent kicks in. Music, dance, laughter … It’s when the Greeks leave their worries behind and escape into a fantasy world.
This year, the Carnival will run from Sunday, February 24 - Sunday, March 17. If you’re in beautiful Athens, here’s your chance to join the celebration!
During the three weeks of Apokries, you’ll see Athenians (and visitors) dressed in masks, colorful wigs, and hilarious costumes. Masqueraders will take over the city. Of course, you’ll also find a host of events for children. After all, the Apokria is a children’s celebration!
The weekends, especially the final carnival weekend, are the the most popular for masqueraders. This is when they attend parties and masked balls at various venues in Athens. So, put on a mask and join the Carnival - A truly fun and memorable experience!
