Feed your Sweet Tooth in the “City of Hermes”

Walking the narrow streets of Hermoupolis, I fell in love with the port town’s architectural beauty: Neoclassical mansions and traditional Cycladic houses cascading down to the busy harbor. Visitors can reach Hermoupolis, the capital of Syros Island, by air and by sea.

When visiting “The City of Hermes,” you must try the island’s signature sweets: Loukoumia and halvadopites. Loukoumia are jelly squares flavored with assorted flavors like rose water, and covered in confectioner’s sugar. The halvadopita, a nougat filled cookie with whole almonds, is equally delicious. I found several specialty shops in downtown Hermoupolis offering freshly made samples, which made it hard to leave without buying a box or two of their goods. My favorite shop is the well-known Korres, located in the town’s beautiful Miaouli Square.
